This work was undertaken by the Universities of Abertay, Dundee and St Andrews under a joint commission on behalf of TAYplan, Architecture and Design Scotland, The Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Tayside and Central Regional Transport Partnership (TACTRAN).

Phase 1 (Completed January 2013) examined over 122 separate pieces of research to consolidate understanding, identify gaps and recommended future research relating to long term societal, environmental and economic change drivers which influence how people will lead their lives and the strategic land use planning implications for the TAYplan area.

Phase 2 (completed April 2013) set out a series of research briefs resulting from phase 1.
